Health Concerns

Hip Dysplasia

This is a common inherited condition in many large dog breeds, including both Golden Retrievers and Standard Poodles. It involves abnormal development of the hip joint, which can lead to discomfort, lameness, and arthritis.Preventing hip dysplasia in Goldendoodles involves maintaining a healthy weight, low-impact exercise, proper supplements, and providing orthopedic beds.

Patellar Luxation

Patellar luxation is a condition where the kneecap (patella) moves out of its normal position, causing intermittent lameness or pain. Preventing patellar luxation in Goldendoodles involves maintaining a healthy weight and providing regular, low-impact exercise to strengthen muscles around the knee joint.

Elbow Dysplasia

Similar to hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia is a developmental condition affecting the elbow joint. Preventing elbow dysplasia in Goldendoodles involves managing weight, and providing age appropriate, low-impact exercise.

Allergies

Both Golden Retrievers and Poodles are prone to allergies, which can manifest as skin irritation, itching, and recurrent ear infections. Allergies may be triggered by environmental factors, food sensitivities, or other allergens. Regular grooming, adjusting diet, and consulting with a trusted veterinarian can be helpful in managing any allergies your doodle may have. The most common doodle allergy is food with chicken or poultry as the main ingredient.

Progressive Retinal Atrophy

PRA is a group of genetic eye diseases that cause progressive vision loss and, in some cases, blindness. Both Golden Retrievers and Poodles are prone to this condition, so it's essential to have breeding dogs tested for PRA. All SCD parent dogs are clear of PRA genetics to ensure that puppies do not suffer from this preventable condition.

Ear Infections

Goldendoodles, especially those with floppy ears, are prone to ear infections due to trapped moisture and debris. Regular ear cleaning as part of routine grooming and consistent monitoring can help prevent infections. There are several over-the-counter products readily available to use in maintaining proper hygiene of your doodle's ears.
